Starkenburg Observatory is a public astronomical observatory , founded in 1970 in Heppenheim ( Germany ). The observatory has about 150 employees. The observatory belongs to the local astronomical club.

The asteroid (14080) Heppenheim, discovered on April 1, 1997 at the Starkenburg Observatory, was named after the nearby city of Heppenheim. The asteroid (6864) Starkenburg, discovered on September 12, 1991 by astronomers Freimut Börngen and Lutz Dieter Schmadel at the Karl Schwarzschild Observatory , was named after the Starkenburg Observatory itself.

Observatory History
At the initiative of Alfred Sturm and Martin Geffert, the construction of the observatory began in 1970. In 1973, the local astronomical club was founded, and in 1991 an observatory was transferred to it. From 1997 to 2003, the observatory held meetings within the framework of the European Radio Astronomy Congress.
