The noble robber is an archetypal image, a hero of a literary work, folk legends or paintings, who was forced to become a criminal , but retained ideas about honor and dignity.

The emergence and development of the image

Apparently, the image of the “noble robber” was born among the people as a reaction to injustice and cruelty on the part of the authorities. From folk tales and legends, the image passed into dramatic literature and was most developed in the romantic genre.

The first "noble robber" in literature is considered to be Tiamida (see links) - the character of Heliodor's novel "Ethiopics", which takes place at the end of the VI century. BC.
