Content
Story
Cal Weaver ( Steve Carell ), the puritanical views of a family man aged “a little over forty”, does not have life, but a dream - a good job, a wonderful home, wonderful children and marriage with a school sweetheart. But when Cal finds out that his wife Emily ( Julianne Moore ) cheated on him with her work colleague David Lindhagen ( Kevin Bacon ) and wants a divorce, his “ideal” life quickly collapses. Cal moves out of the family to a separate apartment, and in the evenings goes to get drunk in a bar, where he talks to everyone about his unsuccessful family life.
At the bar, Cal meets a charming ("a little over thirty") playboy Jacob Palmer ( Ryan Gosling ), who takes patronage over him. Trying to help Cal forget his wife and start his own life, Jacob opens his eyes to the many opportunities that open before him: flirty women, strong drinks and a sense of style that can not be found in a cheap hairdresser or sales store. Cal, who had not been dating for a couple of decades, is a real “sucker,” who not only does not know how to dress stylishly, but even forgot how to talk with women.
In the course of the film, it turns out that Emily was the first and only woman in Cal's life, and he still loves her, which, however, does not stop the hero from sleeping with nine other women, including Kate ( Marisa Tomei ), his son’s school teacher Robbie ( John Bobo ). Robbie, in turn, is in love with the nanny Jessica ( Anali Tipton ), who is 4 years older than him and in love with Cal.
In parallel, the film develops another love story with the participation of Hannah ( Emma Stone ), who unexpectedly falls in love with Jacob Palmer. When Hannah wants to introduce Jacob to her parents, it suddenly turns out that she is the daughter of Cal and Emily.
The film ends with a happy ending for the main characters. Cal and Emily begin to live together again, and Jessica reciprocates Robbie, passing him an envelope with candid photos that she was about to send to Cal.
