Pneumocystis , also pneumocystis ( lat. Pneumocystis ) is a poorly studied genus of fungi - ascomycetes , belonging to the monotypic class Pneumocystidomycetes . All members of the genus are parasites of mammals , including humans.

Biological DescriptionMycelium is absent. Mushroom cells are thin-walled, irregular in shape, with one nucleus. The cells have branches that penetrate the cells of the lungs of affected animals. Sometimes the cells become thick-walled and acquire an ovoid shape (possibly turning into askeys ), form 4-8 smaller first spherical, then sickle-shaped cells (possibly ascospores ).
SystematicsPreviously, the genus Pneumocystis was classified as protists , but later it was shown that pneumocysts are primitive ascomycetes fungi belonging to the Taphrinomycotina subdivision. In addition to pneumocysts parasitizing on the lungs of mammals, this superclass also includes fissile yeast , parasites of higher plants, tafrinomycetes and non-lectov cohabiting with various trees.
