Biography
Born into a peasant family in the village of Dimamerki, Loevsky district, Gomel region, Belorussian SSR . He graduated from the secondary 7-year school (1935), then - Klimovy Agricultural College (1935-1939), courses at the USSR Prosecutor’s Office in Leningrad (1948), graduated from the history department at the Gomel Pedagogical Institute (1950). In 1951 he entered the graduate school of the Belarusian State University. In 1953 he defended his thesis, and in 1964 - his doctoral thesis.
Member of the Great Patriotic War . [1] He studied at the naval political school.
He began his career in the Amur region. In 1947 he returned to Belarus. He worked as a prosecutor in the city of Gomel after studying for prosecutor courses. In 1958–1960 he was the secretary of the Minsk city committee of the Communist Party of Belarus . In 1961-1964 - the dean of the preparatory faculty, and in 1964-1965 - the law faculty of the Belarusian State University . He was also head of the Department of History of the USSR at BSU .
In 1969–1975, I. M. Ignatenko served as director of the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences of the BSSR . In 1966-1969 and 1975-1980 - Director of the Institute for the History of the Party under the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Belarus . In 1980–1991, he was the head of the sector, since 1991, the chief researcher, in 1995–1997, an advisor to the directorate of the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences of Belarus , since 1997, the chief researcher of this institute [2] .
Scientific and educational activities
He studied the history of the February and October revolutions in Belarus, studied historical subjects related to the events of the civil war and foreign intervention in the BSSR, as well as issues of the Belarusian national liberation movement and national-state construction.
He prepared more than 60 candidates and more than 20 doctors of historical sciences.

(1921–1939) ”(1966) and“ The Victory of Soviet Power in Belarus ”(1967),“ The Byelorussian SSR and the Socialist Countries: Strengthening Friendship, Brotherhood Cooperation (1945–87)) (1987).
Awards
Awarded the Order of the Patriotic War, II degree (1985), medals, Honorary Diploma of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Byelorussian SSR.
