Derby Hippodrome (Roman settlement)

Pitcher found in the settlement

Derby Racecourse Roman settlement is the third settlement in Derby , a small town in the Roman province of Britain . It was located 600 meters east of Fort Derventio at Little Chester (now bounded from the east by Beaufort Street and Old Mansfield Road , Nottingham Road from the south, the river from the west and Darley and Little Eaton from the north), in modern Derbyshire [1 ] . From Derventio to Sawley, a Roman road — the Icknild Road — passed through the settlement. The settlement is included in the list of national monuments ( National Monument ) under the number 13236. Excavations of the area were carried out from 1968 to 1974.

The first Roman fort in the area, the Roman Fort of Stratt Park , was built on the other side of the Derwent River in Stratt Park; For about 80 years, it was replaced by a fort in Little Chester. The fort was later re-occupied and used for the next twenty-five years, then liberated until a stone wall was built around the city in the 3rd century [2] . There is evidence of extensive Roman activity in Little Chester.

Derba Hippodrome was founded around 90 AD [3] . He refers to the English heritage as an important example of fort- vicus . It was a civilian settlement at a Roman military fort, in this case, Derventio. This means that the roots took the Roman way of life and integrated into the Roman economy, that is, they were Romanized [4] .

Ceramic kilns dating from 90 to the middle of the II century were discovered; the settlement specialized in the production of ceramics (later on in metal works). The jug found there is currently on display at the Derby Museum and Art Gallery . The city also had a large cemetery with five stone mausoleums [5] .
