"General Hospital" ( English General Hospital ) is a lengthy American daytime television soap opera that has been broadcast on ABC since April 1, 1963. The series is included in the " Guinness Book of Records " as the longest American soap opera in history after the TV series " Guiding Light " and " How the World Turns " ^[2] . The show is also the longest-running film project in Hollywood , as well as the longest-running ABC channel project.

The show was created by screenwriters Frank and Doris Hursley, who invented the fictional city of Port Charles and the general hospital, by the husband and wife, which resulted in the name General Hospital .

The series holds a record for the number of Emmy awards in the category " Best Drama Series " - ten victories. The popularity of the series led to the creation of several foreign adaptations and spin-offs .

The main hospital reached its rating summit in the early 1980s due to the popularity of heroes Luke and Laura ( Anthony Giri and Jeni Francis ), whose wedding in 1981 was watched by more than 30 million viewers, which is an absolute record in the history of soap operas ^{[3] [4]} .

In 2003, “ TV Guide ” awarded the show the title of “ The Greatest Soap Opera of All Time ” ^[5] . In 2007, Time magazine included the series in the list of “ One Hundred Best TV Shows in History ” ^[6] .

Since September 17, 2010, the series is the oldest American soap opera. On April 14, 2011, ABC announced the cancellation of the TV series “ All My Children ” and “ One Life to Live ”, leaving only the Main Hospital as the only soap opera on the channel ^[7] .
