The single was released on seven-inch vinyl and on CDs . It contains four musical compositions. The title track, “The State of Massachusetts,” was also included on The Meanest of Times , and the other three were on the limited edition album and version for iTunes .

The first single from The State of Massachusetts became one of the 100 most played songs on US modern rock radio in the United States in October 2007. Also in October, songs were added to playlist-18 at the alternative rock station. By January 2008, the song had become one of the Big 60s alternative rock songs in the United States. The composition took 83rd place according to Rolling Stone magazine in the list of 100 best songs of 2007. A cover version of “The State of Massachusetts” is now available for download in the Guitar Hero II video game. This song also became the soundtrack in MTV 's Circus Nitro.

The theme of the song is the effects of drugs on individuals and their families. The song became popular and often performed during matches of the Boston Red Sox baseball team and the Boston Bruins hockey club.

The video for “The State of Massachusetts” was filmed at the site of one of the largest homeless shelters near Boston in Long Island.
