History
The project for the creation of Vyazemsk Vicariate was put forward by Tsar Feodor Alekseevich at the Council in November 1681, the tsar proposed to establish 2 episcopal departments in the subordination of Smolensk Metropolitan - in Bryansk and Vyazma. The participants of the Council of 1681–1682 refused to establish subordinate episcopal departments, so that “in the hierarchal rank there was no church divination” [2] .
In the second half of the 18th century, the city with the county was located in the Vyazemsky District of the Moscow Diocese under the control of the bishops of Sarsk and Podonskys (Krutitskys) . From Krutitsy diocese in Smolensk Vyazma was transferred in 1764 [2] .
The decision to establish Vyazma Vicariate was taken at an extraordinary diocesan congress of clergy and laity of the Smolensk province chaired by Smolensk Bishop Feodosiy (Feodosiyev) on May 16, 1917 in Smolensk. The congress decided to increase the number of episcopal departments by creating vicariare in the major centers of the province [2] .
The Vyazemsk Vicariate Church was opened according to the resolution of Patriarch Tikhon and the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church on June 19, 1918. On August 12, the former Orlovsky bishop was appointed the Vyazemsky bishop. Macarius (Gnevushev) , from the beginning of 1918, was the prior of the Vyazma St. John the Baptist Monastery . In 1936, the department stopped [2] .
After that, the vicariate in Vyazma existed in 1955 and in 2005–2009 .
On May 5, 2015, by the decision of the Holy Synod, an independent Vyazma diocese was formed by separating the diocese from Smolensk with the inclusion of the new Smolensk metropolitanate [1] .
