Doom
Late in the evening of July 7, 1993, Mia left the recording studio and visited her friend, the last time she was seen alive at about two in the morning [1] . Zapata was brutally beaten , raped, and killed by strangulation on her way home.
It is known that on the day of the murder the singer had a headset with her, which confirms the version that she did not know about the persecution [2] .
Mia was buried at Cave Hill Cemetery in her hometown of Louisville .
Investigation
Seattle Police Department, investigating the crime, focused on the friends of the murdered woman, believing that the killer is one of them. Using funds raised by the Seattle music community, the remaining members of the group hired private detective Lee Chiron. For three years, the police and the detective investigated the murder without the slightest advance.
In 1996, information about the investigation was first reported to the public in an episode of Unsolved Mysteries.
7 years passed before new data appeared in the investigation. A random DNA test by Seattle police led to the arrest of a fisherman, Jesús Mesquoy, a Cuban who lived in Seattle for some time while Mia was killed. His DNA matched the samples that were extracted from the saliva found on Zapata's body. The sample remained intact until STR DNA technology was developed. Mesquui's DNA was listed in the DNA database after he was arrested for burglary in Florida in 2002.
Court
Jesus Mesquia was found guilty of the murder of the singer and received 36 years in prison since March 25, 2004.
