“Master Go” ( Chinese trad. 呉 清源 , ex. 吳清源 , pinyin : Wú Qīngyuán , pall .: Wu Qingyuan ) is a 2006 biography film by Tian Zhuangzhuang about the outstanding 20th century player Guo Seigen (birth name is Wu Qingyuan). The film premiered at the 44th New York Film Festival and covers the childhood of Go's master, his becoming as the best player of the time, and also affects the conflict between China as his homeland and Japan , which became his home. The film included an episode with the famous party of the atomic bomb .

Content
Story
The film shows the life of the great player of the 20th century Wu Qingyuan, who became famous under the name of Guo Seigen taken in Japan. As a teenager, he moved from China to Japan to study the game with leading masters. In the 1930s, after the outbreak of war between Japan and China, the family of the hero was supposed to return to his homeland, but Wu Qingyuan remained in Japan to continue studying go. There is no politics or war at the school where he studies, so the hero can devote himself completely to the game and new love. Qingyuan’s career was interrupted in the 1960s due to a car accident, which is not an accident. Due to a brain injury resulting from the accident, he can no longer play go.
Movie Information
The main role was played by Taiwanese actor Chan Chen , known for the movie " Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon ." For his role as master go, Chen was nominated for the 2006 Golden Horse Award in the Best Actor category. In the prologue to the film, a prototype of the protagonist - Guo Seigen [1] was shot . Costume designer for the film was Amy Wada, known for working on costumes in the films “ Runs ” and “ Dreams ” by Akira Kurosawa and “ Hero ” and “ House of Flying Daggers ” by Zhang Yimou [2] .
Criticism
The New York Times called the film “Master Go” “thoughtful and contemplative,” as well as “a luxurious and dignified biography.” [3] The film was nominated for the 2007 Asia Pacific Screen Awards in the Achievement in Cinematography category and received the 2007 Shanghai Film Festival awards for best directing and cinematography [4] .
