Scientific classification

Previously considered a subspecies of brown marsupial mouse [1] .

Distribution

Lives in the tropical zone of the Australian state of Queensland , between the Bluewater Ridge and Mount Windsor Plateau. They are found at an altitude of about 600 m. The natural habitat is high-mountain rainforests with an average annual rainfall of 1,500 mm [1] .

Appearance

The average weight of an adult is 30-40 g. Body length is 90-120 mm, tail is 90-100 mm. The hairline is long, dark brown, bordered with black, brown color on the belly and withers. The tail is thin, light brown in color, with a black tip [2] .

Lifestyle

Nests are arranged in epiphytic ferns , as well as in hollows of trees (as a rule, several individuals live in hollows) [1] . They feed on moths , bugs and other insects , as well as spiders , worms and small vertebrates, lizards and frogs . In addition, they feed on carrion [1] .

Reproduction

The breeding season lasts from late June to late July. After fertilization, the females in the colony die by the first week of August. The bag is well developed. The number of nipples in the female is 6. The cubs remain with the mother for about 5 weeks. Breastfeed until the end of November [2] .
