Geographical position
The village of Smirnovo is located on the right bank of the Berda River, upstream the village of Vershina Second is adjacent, downstream the village of Titovo is adjacent, on the opposite bank is the village of Alekseevka . Drying streams with dams flow through the village. The highway T-0815 passes through the village.
History
- 1857 (according to other sources, 1805 ) - the date of foundation as the village of Popovka .
The death of the 18th Army
- In October 1941, in the area of Chernihivka- Popovka, the 18th Army of the Southern Front was surrounded by units of the 1st Tank Army of the Wehrmacht . Soviet troops suffered heavy losses. The death toll is not known exactly. The number of prisoners, according to German data, amounted to more than 100 thousand soldiers and officers of the Red Army .
- On October 8, 1941 , near the village of Popovka, the commander of the 18th Army, Lieutenant General A.K. Smirnov, died in battle. In memory of this event, the village of Popovka was renamed Smirnovo.
- In 1956 (according to other sources in 1946 ) it was renamed the village of Smirnovo .
