General Information
The Baku Championship as part of an elite women's protest was organized on the eve of the 2011 season, when the WTA transferred the license to the local organizers to the tournament in Portoroz, which had financial problems. Like the Slovenian prize, the championship in Azerbaijan began to take place in July - at the very beginning of the summer hard series, preparatory to the US Open . The competition had stable funding, but from year to year it gathered a rather weak roster, and as a result, after the 2015 season, the association refused to hold the Baku Cup, transferring the license of the prize of the international series to the neighboring tournament in Nanchang , previously held as part of the WTA 125 series.
- Winners and finalists
The competition changed its composition quite a lot from year to year, and the main participants of the championship were usually athletes from the countries of the former USSR . For five single-player tournaments, nine tennis players reached the title match, and the only two-time finalist - Elina Svitolina - realized both of her matches in victories. Eighteen tennis players took part in five double finals, and both two-time finalists - Alexandra Panova and Margarita Gasparyan , as well as Svitolina, became two-time champions. Gasparyan, at the same time, became the only tennis player who won both the single and double prize, and the Russian woman won both her victories in the same year.
