Biography
Born into the family of a well-known political figure, a fighter for independence, the founder and first chairman of the United Malay National Organization (OMNO) party, Dato Onna bin Jaffar. Grandson of the first Chief Minister Johor Jaffar bin Haji Muhammad and the Turkish Circassian .
He received a military education at the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun . During the Second World War (from 1940) he served in the Indian Army in the Middle East, then worked as an instructor at the Malay Police Training Center in Rawalpindi. [1] Later he held a number of administrative positions.
Political activity is connected with UMNO, one of the founders of which was his father Dato Onn (since 1946) [2] . In 1949-1950 - the head of the youth organization, in 1950-1951 - the secretary general of UMNO. In 1951, he left the party after his father and joined Malaya’s Independence Party. In 1958, he received a law degree in London , after which he was engaged in private law practice.
In 1968 he returned to the UMNO, since 1969 - a member of the executive committee of the party and a member of parliament, since 1970 - the Minister of Education. In 1972 he became the vice president of the ULO, and in 1973 - the 1st deputy chairman of the party, the deputy prime minister, from 1973–1974 - also the minister of commerce and industry, from 1974 - also the minister of finance and the minister for the coordination of government industrial organizations.
From January 15, 1976 - Acting Chairman of the Party and Chairman of the ruling party coalition National Front.
From January 15, 1976 to July 16, 1981 - Prime Minister. It is considered the “Father of Unity” (in the sense of racial equality) of Malaysia. Resigned from the active policy for health reasons. In early 1981, widowed. He died in a hospital in the United States, buried in the national mausoleum of heroes Makam Pakhlavan .
He and his predecessor as PMO and UMNO leader were married to the daughters of Mohammad Noah, who was a well-known Malaysian politician.
Memory
- In Kuala Lumpur, a memorial museum was created in his former residence.
- In 1991 and 2007 stamps with his portrait were produced.
