Charles Dickens was born February 7, 1812 in a suburb of Portsmouth - Landport . He was the second child of eight children of John Dickens (1785–1851) and Elizabeth Dickens, nee Barrow (1789–1863). His father served as an officer at the Royal Navy's naval base ; in January 1815 he was transferred to London, in April 1817 the family moved to Chatham . Here Charles attended the Baptist pastor William Gilles school, even when the family moved to London again. Life in the capital, beyond his means, led his father in 1824 to a debt prison . Oliver Twist's Life and Adventures and other works of 1838-1843

Two years later, Dickens performed with Oliver Twist and The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby 1838–1839 .

The Adventures of Oliver Twist ( Oliver Twist; or, The Parish Boy's Progress ), ( 1838 ) is the story of an orphan born in a workhouse and living in the slums of London . Personal life

In the 1850s, Dickens reached the zenith of fame. He was a spoiler of fate - a famous writer, a ruler of thoughts and a wealthy person - in a word, a person for whom fate was not stingy with gifts.

Dickens was of medium height. His natural liveliness and low-representative appearance were the reason that he impressed those around him as a man of stunted or, in any case, very miniature build. In his youth, on his head was too extravagant, even for that era, hat of brown hair, and later he wore a dark mustache and a thick, lush, dark goatee in such an original form that she made him look like a foreigner.

The former transparent pallor of his face, the luster and expressiveness of his eyes remained with him; “I’ll also note the actor’s moving mouth and his extravagant manner of dressing.” Chesterton writes about this:

He wore a velvet jacket, some incredible waistcoats, reminiscent of their color completely implausible sunsets, white hats unprecedented at that time, a completely unusual, cutting white eyes. He willingly dressed up in stunning bathrobes; they even say that he posed for a portrait in such a robe.

Behind this appearance, in which there was so much posturing and nervousness, there was a great tragedy.

The needs of Dickens family members exceeded his income. The erratic, purely bohemian nature did not allow him to bring any order into his affairs. He not only overworked his rich and fruitful brain, forcing him to work excessively creatively, but, being an unusually brilliant reader, he tried to earn decent fees by lectures and reading excerpts from his novels. The impression of this purely acting reading was always colossal. Dickens was apparently one of the greatest reading virtuosos. But on his trips, he fell into the hands of some dubious entrepreneurs and, earning, at the same time drove himself to exhaustion.

On April 2, 1836, Charles married Katherine Thomson Hogarth (May 19, 1815 - November 22, 1879), the eldest daughter of his friend, journalist George Hogarth. Katherine was a faithful wife and gave birth to 10 children: 7 sons - Charles Callyford Boz Dickens Jr. (January 6, 1837 - July 20, 1896), Walter Saved Landor (February 8, 1841 - December 31, 1863), Francis Jeffrey (January 15, 1844 - 11 June 1886), Alfred D'Orsay Tennyson (October 28, 1845 - January 2, 1912), Sidney Smith Galdimand (April 18, 1847 - May 2, 1872), Henry Fielding (January 16, 1849 - December 21, 1933) and Edward Bulver-Lytton (13 March 1852 - January 23, 1902), three daughters - Mary (March 6, 1838 - July 23, 1896), Catherine Elizabeth Macridi (October 29, 1839 - May 9, 1929) and Dora Annie (August 16, 1850 - April 14, 1851). But the family life of Dickens was not quite successful. The quarrels with his wife, some complicated and dark relations with her family, fear for sick children made the family a source of constant worries and torment for Dickens. In 1857, Charles met the 18-year-old actress Ellen Ternan and immediately fell in love. He rented an apartment for her, for many years visited his love. Their romance lasted until the death of the writer. She did not go on stage anymore. The film “The Invisible Woman ” is dedicated to these close relationships (United Kingdom, 2013, directed by Rafe Fiennes ).

But all this is not so important as the melancholy idea that overwhelmed Dickens that essentially the most serious in his works - his teachings, his calls to conscience of those in power - remains in vain that, in reality, there is no hope of improving that the terrible situation created in the country from which he saw no way out, even looking at life through humorous glasses that softened the sharp contours of reality in the eyes of the author and his readers. He writes at this time:

With every hour, the old conviction grows in me that our political aristocracy, together with our parasitic elements, are killing England. I do not see the slightest glimmer of hope. As for the people, he so sharply turned his back on both the parliament and the government, and shows such a profound indifference in relation to both of them that such a order of things begins to inspire me with the most serious and alarming fears. Noble prejudices, on the one hand, and the habit of submission, on the other, completely paralyze the will of the people. Everything collapsed after the great XVII century . Personality oddities

Dickens often spontaneously fell into a trance, was prone to visions, and from time to time experienced a state of deja vu. Dickens once told him that every word, before moving on to the paper, is first clearly heard by him, and his characters are constantly nearby and communicate with him.

While working on the “Antiquities Bench”, the writer could neither eat nor sleep: little Nell was constantly spinning under her feet, demanding attention, crying out for sympathy, and jealous when the author was distracted from her by talking to someone from outsiders.

While working on the novel Martin Cheslvit , Dickens was bored with her jokes by Mrs. Gump: he had to fend off her by force. “Dickens warned Mrs. Gump more than once: if she does not learn to behave decently and will not appear only on call, he will not give her a single line at all!” Wrote Lewis. Later works

Melancholy and hopelessness are also permeated by Dickens' social novel Hard Times (1854). This novel was a tangible literary and artistic blow inflicted on capitalism of the 19th century with its idea of ​​uncontrollable industrial progress. In his own way, the grand and eerie figure of Bounderby is written with genuine hatred. But Dickens is not sparing in the novel the leader of the strike movement - chartist Slackbridge, ready for any sacrifice in order to achieve his goals. In this work, for the first time, the author questioned - the indisputable past for him - the value of personal success in society.

The end of the literary work of Dickens was marked by a whole series of significant works. The novel “Little Dorrit” ( Little Dorrit , 1855–1857 ) was followed by Dickens's historical novel “ The Tale of Two Cities ” ( A Tale of Two Cities , 1859 ), dedicated to the French Revolution . Recognizing the need for revolutionary violence, Dickens turns away from him as if from insanity. It was quite in the spirit of his worldview, and, nevertheless, he managed to create an immortal book in his own way.

For the same reasons, he did not dare to bring the "high hopes" of the hero to their complete collapse. But the whole idea of ​​the novel suggests the laws of such an outcome.

Dickens reaches new artistic heights in his swan song - in a large multi-faceted canvas, the novel " Our mutual friend " ( Eng. Our Mutual Friend , 1864 ). In this work, Dickens's desire to take a break from tense social topics is guessed. Fascinatingly conceived, filled with the most unexpected types, all sparkling with wit - from irony to touching non-malignant humor - this novel was probably intended by the author to be easy, sweet, funny. His tragic characters are drawn as if in semitones and are largely present in the background, and negative characters turn out to be ordinary people who put on a villainous mask, or so small and funny personalities that we are ready to forgive them for their treachery; and sometimes so unhappy people who are able to arouse in us instead of indignation only a feeling of bitter pity. In this novel, Dickens’s appeal to a new style of writing is noticeable: instead of ironic verbosity, mimicking the literary style of the Victorian era, a laconic manner resembling cursive writing. In the novel, the idea of ​​the poisonous effect of money — the symbol of the garbage heap — on social relations and the senselessness of the vain aspirations of members of society, is carried out.

In this last completed work, Dickens demonstrated all the strengths of his humor, overshadowed by the wonderful, cheerful, pretty images of this idyll from gloomy thoughts that possessed him.

Apparently, gloomy thoughts should again find a way out in Dickens' detective novel The Mystery of Edwin Drood .

From the very beginning of the novel, there has been a change in Dickens' creative manner - his desire to impress the reader with a fascinating plot, immerse him in an atmosphere of mystery and uncertainty. He would have succeeded to the full extent - remains unclear, since the work remained unfinished.

On June 9, 1870, the fifty-eight- year- old Dickens, exhausted by colossal work, a rather hectic life, and many troubles, died of a stroke in his house Gadshill Place , located in the village of Higham (Kent) .

After death

Dickens' fame continued to grow after his death. He was turned into a real idol of English literature. His name began to be called next to the name of Shakespeare , his popularity in England in the 1880s and 1890s . eclipsed the fame of Byron .
