St. Joseph's Cathedral ( Whale. 西 开 教堂) is a Catholic church located in Tianjin , China . Also known as the Western Church. The Church of St. Joseph is the cathedral of the Tianjin Diocese . In 1991, the Cathedral of St. Joseph was listed as a protected monument of Tianjin.
History
On April 27, 1912, the Apostolic Vicariate of Coastal Zhili was formed in the city of Tianjin by the Holy See . The Cathedral of the Apostolic Vicariate of Coastal Zhili became the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary the Victory in Tianjin.
The construction of the church of St. Joseph was started by Bishop Paul-Marie Dumont in 1913 on the territory of the French concession . In 1926 the construction of the temple was completed and the bishop's department was transferred to the church of St. Joseph. When the cathedral was opened elementary school and hospital.
On August 23, 1966, the Church of St. Joseph was attacked by the Red Guards, who destroyed the three towers of the temple along with the cross. In 1976, the church suffered greatly from the Tangshan earthquake. In 1979, the restoration of the temple began, which was completed in the autumn of 1980.
In 1991, the Cathedral of St. Joseph was listed as a protected monument of Tianjin.
