Biography
Born in London, the son of English mathematician Samuel Hunter Christie , was educated at King's College London , and at Trinity College in Cambridge, where he took fourth place in academic achievement in mathematics [5] . He worked at the Greenwich Observatory , from 1870 to 1881 - chief assistant, in 1881 he took the post of Royal Astronomer instead of the elderly George Airy and remained in this post until 1910. Elected a member of the Royal Society of London in June 1881 [6] . He was president of the Royal Astronomical Society from 1882 to 1885.

Christy died and was buried in the sea near Gibraltar in 1922. He was married to Mary Violet, daughter of Sir Alfred Hickman.
