A feature of Svenonius’s musical career is theatricality, the grotesque nature of what is happening on stage (and beyond). Ian's first band, Nation of Ulysses, was founded in 1988 and has become a notable and important phenomenon on the Washington punk scene. The group broke up in 1992, in the process of recording their third studio album. After a short-term side project by Cupid Car Club , Svenonius founded The Make-Up in 1995, which combined garage rock , soul and the so-called “liberation theology” in his work. The resulting mixture of concepts, the musicians nicknamed "Gospel Yeh-Yeh" [1] . The Make-Up dissolved early in 2001, and a year later, Svenonius formed the band Weird War, who were also known briefly as the Scene Creamers, in which he is still active. Svenonius' solo work includes the 2001 album Play Power under the fictional pseudonym of David Candy [2] , the book The Psychic Soviet [3] , and as host of Soft Focus on VBS.tv [4] . All projects of Svenonius, lyrics of his songs and essays are united by leftist, anti-authoritarian Marxist rhetoric.

Music Projects

Nation of Ulysses

The first group of Svenonius became Nation of Ulysses . The group was founded in the spring of 1988, initially consisted of 4 members: Ian Svenonious - vocals and trumpet, Steve Kroner - guitar, Steve Gamboa - bass, James Canty - drums. Later, in 1989, Tim Green joined the group and the group became known as “Nation of Ulysses” [5] The Nation of Ulysses called themselves not a rock'n'roll group in the traditional sense, but a “political party” [1] or even “A cry of liberation” (“a shout of secession”) [6] . Explaining their intentions, Svenonius said: “it's basically a new nation underground for the dispossessed youth colony. It's all about smashing the old edifice, the monolith of rock and roll ” [7] .

In 1991, before the band released their first album, Svenonius was selected as the first “Sassiest Boy in America” according to the youth magazine Sassy Magazine . On the pages of the magazine he gave an interview about the sound of the group and their political views [8] .
