History
In the 19th century, there was a wasteland on the site of the current Theater Square in Rostov-on-Don. On one side of it was the city of Rostov-on-Don, on the other hand - Nakhichevan-on-Don .
In the 1920s - the first half of the 1930s, the square was called the Square of the Revolution. After the construction of the theater building, the square changed its name to Theater Square. The theater building was built in a lowland, in the park of the Revolution, broken in 1926-1927 by agronomist-artist G.N. Zamnius on an area of 21 hectares . The theater was built in a constructivist style, widespread in the 1920s in architecture.
With the completion of the construction of the theater building in Rostov, the architectural appearance of the square began to take shape. Earlier, on the northwest side, the buildings of the Nikolaev city hospital adjoined to it, built in 1890-1894 with donations from the wealthy citizens of Rostov. The hospital project was developed by the Rostov architect N. M. Sokolov . In 1913, the office building of the Vladikavkaz Railway (architects A.P. Butkov, N. Walter) was built in a wasteland in the modern style. On the south side of the square in 1926 a five-story residential building of railway workers grew up. During the Great Patriotic War, the theater building was severely damaged. When restoring the building to a competition for its restoration, projects were developed that strongly changed the appearance of the theater square [1] .
In 1981, the Atomkotlomash tower was built. In the 1980s, the new building of the medical institute (medical university) appeared on the western side of the square. At the same time, construction began on the Theater Descent, a cascade of multi-story residential buildings descending to the Don. In the south-west near the Atomkotlomash building, during the years of perestroika, a residential building was erected using architectural achievements. Each of the buildings near the square has the architectural features of its time.

Description
On the square are the Main Directorate of the North Caucasian Railway , the Rostov Academic Drama Theater Gorky , the offices of such well-known companies as, for example, Stella Bank.
The building of the North Caucasian Railway (former Office of the Vladikavkaz Railway ) is a monument of public architecture at the beginning of the 20th century, it is built in the tradition of a rationalist modernist style .
Also on the square is the memorial "To the Soldiers for the Liberation of the City from Nazi Invaders" , which was established on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War . The monument is a 72-meter- high stele with a stylized gilded image of the Greek goddess Nika , dressed in a raincoat .
Near the theater is an ensemble of fountains , the author of the sculptural composition of which is Evgeny Vuchetich . The fountain is a square pool with a central sculptural group on a pedestal of four atlantes , which hold a bowl with jets beating upward. The group is surrounded by pedestals with figures of frogs and turtles , from whose mouths horizontal jets beat. There is an urban legend , which says that the young sculptor gave the faces of these amphibian features to the faces of some city chiefs. The sculptural sculptures are made of concrete.
