Biography and Activities
Larry got to Downing Street from the London Battersea Dogs and Cats Home . Since the residence of the head of government is located in an old building, mice and rats are a constant problem there and, according to tradition, cats are an integral attribute of the residence [1] . In January 2011, one rodent even hit the camera lens and was shown on television. After presenting at an official briefing, on February 16, 2011, Larry took the post of Chief Mouselov of the Residence of the Government of Great Britain ( English Chief Mouser to the Cabinet Office ) [2] . His predecessor in this post was the cat Sybil , but she died back in 2009. According to The Guardian , Larry caught the first mouse on Downing Street on April 22. Larry was one of the most recognizable cats in the world. Despite the attention to his person, he was quite calm about the press.
In the newspaper Daily Telegraph , a confession of a cat was published:
... I had to listen to endless lectures on the noble estate of cats in power. Formally, this post was introduced only in 1924, but the court cats were still under Henry VIII . And therefore, although I am a purebred cat, I am charged with the obligation to behave with appropriate dignity, as Humphrey , Wilberforce, Nelson and my other predecessors did before me. And this means not chasing girls and no contact with relatives. Then they explained to me that now I am a civil servant , and therefore they can also freeze my salary like everyone else, in other words, they can introduce grocery cards for me ... Sometimes it seems to me that this country is going to hell [2] .
In 2011, Simon & Schuster published the Larry Diaries book [3] .
On September 16, 2012, the British Prime Minister decided to abandon the services of Larry as the main mousetrap. According to press reports, Larry improperly performed his duties, for the entire time of service he caught only one mouse [4] . As the main mousetrap, Freya's cat was to replace him [5] . There was a conflict between two cats [6] .

After the conflict, Larry and his successor decided to leave the cat in his post and to continue working with Freya - “so as not to hurt his feelings” [7] . In the future, colleagues switched to peaceful coexistence. Despite his resignation, Larry continues to live on 10 Downing Street. [8]
In October 2012, an honorary Blue Plate in honor of Larry appeared at the Battersea Shelter [9] .
In 2013, the suspicion of antipathy to the cat Larry, which was reported in his book “Together” by political commentator Matthew d'Ancona [10] [11] , was the reason for the drop in the rating of British Prime Minister David Cameron . In England, a campaign was launched in support of the cat [12] [1] . Downing Street officially denied suspicion of disrespect for the cat [13] .
In April 2016, Larry got a competitor in the building of the British Foreign Office on King Charles Street - the "new employee of Her Majesty's diplomatic service" cat Palmerston. Larry posted on the official Twitter page a poll on “Who is the best cat in the government?” As of April 2016, Larry received 89 percent of the vote [14] [15] [16] [17] . In July 2016, it was announced that Larry would remain and continue his activities in the residence after Cameron's resignation. [18]
On July 14, 2016, the Daily Mail reported that the cat Larry and the cat Palmerston (the official mousetrap from the British Foreign Ministry) decided to "sort things out" on Downing Street in London, and posted the corresponding video of their meeting in the article [19] .
