Loretta Devine ( born Loretta Devine , born August 21, 1949) is an American character actress . On television, she is best known for her roles in the Fox series Boston School (2000-2004) and her occasional participation in the Shonda Rimes series Anatomy of Passion (2005-2013), for her role in the latter she won the Emmy Award in 2011 . Devine also won eight NAACP Image Award for various roles [4] .

Early life

Devine grew up in Houston, Texas. Her mother, Eunice O'Neill (née Toliver), was a beautician, and her father, James Devine, worked as a worker [5] .

Career

Devine began her career in 1978 with participation in Broadway musicals, including Dream Girls . Together with Wikilin Reynolds, she performed in the play The Colored Museum , and then they starred as sisters in the short-lived sitcom CBS Sugar and Spice . Devine also had secondary roles in the sitcoms Another World and Rock.

In 1995, Devine starred in the commercially successful film “ Waiting for an Exhalation ” with Whitney Houston , Angela Bassett and Lela Rochon , and a year later starred in the film “ Priest 's Wife ”, again with Houston. Both roles earned her the NAACP Image Award for Best Supporting Actress in a motion picture. In 1998, she had a supporting role in the movie " Return to Origins " with Alfrey Woodard , and a year later she starred with her in the film "Funny Valentines". Devine also appeared in the films “ City Legends ” (1998), “ City Legends 2 ” (2000), “ I Am Sam ” (2001) and “ Clash ” (2004). In 2004, she starred with Kimberly Elise in the movie “Woman, You Are Free!”, Earning an Independent Spirit nomination for Best Actress in a Supporting Role .

From 2000 to 2004, Devine starred in the Fox series Boston School, playing as a teacher. The role brought her three more NAACP Image Award. Since then, Devine has had regular roles in Lucky Card ( Lifetime , 2004-2005), Eli Stone ( ABC , 2008-2009), Great Georgia ( ABC Family , 2011), and Client List (Lifetime , 2012-2013) and the Carmichael Show ( NBC , since 2015). From 2005 to 2013, she had a secondary role as Adele Webber in the series Shonda Rimes " Anatomy of Passion ." The role earned her an Emmy Award in 2011 and a nomination in 2012, as well as another NAACP Image Award and a nomination for “ Choice of Television Critics ” [4] . Between this, she continued to appear on the big screen in films such as Christmas (2007), First Sunday (2008), Death at a Funeral (2010), and The Trial of a Wedding (2011).
