Geographical position

The gorge begins in the Rutulsky district , at the foot of the northern slopes of the Main Caucasian and southern slopes of the Helmets-Akhtynsky ranges, in the Kabyak tract. Before the village of Khnov, the gorge goes south, then turns east, and after docking with the Thii Gorge at an altitude of 1455 m, it goes to the northeast, ending at the Samur River valley . After docking with the Mazinsky Gorge, the duplication of the Helmets-Akhtynsky Range from the Main Caucasus Mountains passes to the Shalbuzdag Range.

Geology

The gorge is composed of clay slate shales and sandstones. In the middle part of the gorge porphyrites and tufogenic schists. The bottom is limestone.

Climate

The climate in the gorge is dry, from alpine in the upper reaches of the Akhtychay River, to temperate continental at the mouth of the river, near Samur. It rains rarely.

Value

The Akhtychaya gorge is the largest gorge in the Samur River basin, after the gorge (valley) of Samur itself . The road passing through the gorge is the only link between the villages of the southern part of the Akhtyn region and the rest of the world. Also, the gorge separates the Helmets-Akhtyn ridge from the Main Caucasus and Shalbuzdag ranges.

Mineral springs

In the ravine, cultivated hot sulfuric healing springs hit from under the ground. Mainly, near the villages of Akhty , Kurukal , Yaldzhukh and Khnov .

Population

The population of the gorge is bi-national. In the villages of Borch and Khnov , rutulians live. And in the villages of Smugul , Mijah , Kurukal and Akhty Lezgins .
