Icari Sea [1] ( lat. Icarus, Icarium mare [1] , other Greek ᾽Ίκαρος, ᾽Ικάριον πέλαγος ) is the southeastern part of the Aegean Sea around the island of Ikaria along the coasts of Dorida , Caria and Ionia . Named after the hero of ancient Greek myths Icarus [1] [2] [3] [4] .

Name Origin
The name of the Ikaria Sea is associated with ancient Greek mythology and the legend of Icarus , the son of Daedalus and the slave Navkrata. Icarus is known for his terrible death. When his father gave him wings of bird feathers held together by wax in order to escape from the island of Crete , he ordered his son to fly over the Aegean Sea at low altitude. Not listening to his father, Icarus rose high, and the Sun melted the wax of his wings: he died, falling into the sea, which was called Ikari [5] .
