History
Magdala is considered the place of origin of St. Mary Magdalene, the disciple of Christ and the Myrrh-bearing woman. According to legend, it was at the place of the current location of the temple in her honor that a miracle of the expulsion of seven demons from it occurred [2] .
After this, He walked through cities and villages, preaching and preaching the Kingdom of God, and with Him twelve, and some women whom He healed from evil spirits and diseases: Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons came out, and John, wife of Husa, the householder Herod, and Susanna, and many others who served him with their property.
- Lk. 8.2
The birthplace of Mary Magdalene became an object of pilgrimage back in the Middle Ages , from the time of the Byzantine Empire . A church was built here, which later, presumably, was destroyed at the hands of the Saracens [2] . Under the Crusaders, the church was restored. It is mentioned by the Russian abbot Daniel [3] .
In 1908, archimandrite Leonid (Sentsov) acquired a large plot of land on the coast of the Sea of Galilee with the source of St. Mary Magdalene. As noted by Archimandrite Leonid, “near Tiberias, a large plot was again acquired on the shore of Lake Tiberias with mineral springs, where an orange garden is planted and it is planned to build a temple and a hut for fans. This place is a wonderful oasis on the deserted shores of the lake ” [3] .
The First World War prevented the construction of the church in the name of St. Mary Magdalene. On a plot in Magdal, in one of the houses, a temporary chapel was built. In the difficult post-revolutionary years for the Russian Spiritual Mission, part of the land and the house were leased.
After the formation of the State of Israel, the object was transferred to the Russian spiritual mission of the Moscow Patriarchate. The Magdalen Garden has been updated [3] . This site was considered one of the most picturesque on the entire coast of Lake Galilee, as a result of which it has long been of interest to local merchants who accused the Russian Spiritual Mission of inefficient use of this land [4] .
In 1962, under the head of the Russian Democratic Republic, Archimandrite Nicodemus (Rotov) , a small church was built on the site in the name of St. Mary Magdalene [3] .
In 1996, the temple was carried out external and internal restoration [5] .
By Easter 1997, the walls inside the church were painted with frescoes in the Byzantine style on evangelical themes by Moscow artist Yaroslav Dobrynin associated with the Sea of Galilee. The temple has a new wooden iconostasis [3] .
In June 1997, Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Alexy II laid the first stone of the “House for Pilgrims”, which was subsequently built to mark the 2000th anniversary of Christianity. A small hotel for pilgrims operates to this day [6] .
In 1998, through the efforts of Archimandrite Theodosius (Vasnev) , a new house was built on the site in Magdal for the reception of pilgrims [3] .
The compound is a closed facility, it can be visited only with the blessing and by prior arrangement. This was done in order to protect the quiet life of the farmstead from onlookers, as it is located on the road along which numerous excursion tours take place [7] .
