History
The street arose in 1895 in connection with the planning and development of the former garden and manor of Friedrich Mering , professor of private therapy at the Kiev Imperial University of St. Vladimir , as one of the newly constructed streets, called Nikolayevskaya , which received in honor of Emperor Nicholas II .
In 1919, the street was named Karl Marx Street , which had until 1996 (except for 1941-1943, when the street was again Nikolaev).
The modern name in honor of the architect V. Gorodetsky - since 1996.
Development
The street was built by architects G. Schleifer , E. Bradtman and V. Gorodetsky . Immediately the street was lined with high-quality paving stones .
Already until 1897, part of the street was built up - both with residential buildings and buildings for other purposes - the Continental Hotel, the building of the Worker Society, and the furniture factory of Kimaer.
In 1903, the Krutikov circus building appeared on the bend of the street - the only two-story circus building in Europe at that time. So at the beginning of the XX century there was an ensemble of luxurious residential and public buildings, which had no analogues in the city. No wonder this corner of the city in our time is sometimes called "Kiev Paris".
During the war, the city suffered a number of irreparable losses - the Khreshchatyk building was almost completely destroyed, and the adjacent streets, in particular, this one, were damaged. So, the building of the Krutikov circus (No. 7), house No. 1, 2 and building No. 3, in which V. Gorodetsky once lived, were destroyed, almost all other houses were damaged (these houses were burned down, but they were restored after the war) . Partially managed to restore the building of the Continental Hotel.
On the site of the Krutikov circus destroyed during the war in 1964, the building of the Ukraine cinema was built.
