Biography
The exact place of birth of Manjushrimitra is unknown. Manjushrimitra came from the family of the brahman Sukhapala and his wife Kuhan in a village west of Bodhgai . [1] Manjushrimitra was a resident at Nalanda University, where he was considered a respected scholar and practitioner Yogachara .
According to legend, when Garab Dorje was seven years old, he defeated all the Pandit scholars of the country in which he lived, and then taught them the Dzogchen teachings. News of Garab Dorje reached India , where local pandits decided to send the most learned of them, Manjushrimitra, to win the dispute. [2] Upon arrival, he discovered that the boy was indeed a great Master and, repenting, confessed his intention. Garab Dorje forgave Manjushrimitra, instructed him and asked him to write a text setting forth the arguments of the Teaching with which he won the dispute. The text was recorded by Manjushrimitra under the name “Contemplation of Bodhicitta” (published in English by K. Lipman under the name Primordial Experience ) [3] .
Manjushrimitra studied under Garab Dorje for 75 years [4] . After the transfer of all the teachings, Garab Dorje went to Nirvana on the banks of the Danatika River. In desperation, Manjushrimitra exclaimed, “Woe! Woe! Woe, ”and, according to legend, Garab Dorje appeared before his student in the rainbow light, saying“ Three Words Beating at the Point, ”the essence of the Dzogchen teachings. [3]
The three precepts of Garab Dorje are the main instructions of Dzogchen and, in accordance with them, Manjushrimitra classified the doctrine into three sections: Semde , Longde , Manngagde . The main student of Manjushrimitra was Sri Singh , who carried out the further classification of texts. [3]
