
Scarface Charlie , Charlie Scarface ( Eng. Scarface Charley ; c. 1851 - December 3, 1896 ) - one of the leaders of the Indian tribe modok .
Scarface Charlie was born around 1851 . He gained fame during the Modoc War , which took place on the territory of the modern states of Oregon and California from 1872 to 1873 .
During the disarmament of the modoks, Scarface Charlie was involved in a conflict with Lieutenant Fraser Butell, as a result of which they shot at each other. Their actions provoked a shootout, which turned into a battle. This battle, known as the Battle of Lost River , marked the beginning of the Modoc War.
He took an active part in the fighting modok. On April 26, 1873, with a group of soldiers, he attacked American soldiers. Captain Evan Thomas, led by 5 officers , 66 soldiers and 14 scouts from Warm Springs Reservation, set off in search of rebellious modocs. At noon, Thomas's squad stopped at a halt near Sand Butte, and was unexpectedly attacked by Scarface's Charlie squad. After the battle on Dry Lake, which the modoks lost, he decided to surrender to the US authorities. He was sent to the Indian Territory and led the exiled modoks. Scarface Charlie died on December 3, 1896 on the Kuapo Reservation in the northeast Indian Territory.
