An old Austrian noble family, owning significant estates in Tyrol, Saxony, and most of all in Bohemia, received the count dignity of the Holy Roman Empire in 1629.
Famous representatives of the genus:
- Count Leopold Leonard Raimund von Thun-Hohenstein (1748-1826) - the last prince-bishop of Passau.
- Count Friedrich von Thun-Hohenstein (1810-1881) - Austrian politician and diplomat; Grand-nephew of the previous one.
- Count Leopold von Thun-Hohenstein (1811–1888) - Austrian statesman; younger brother of the previous one.
- Count Guido von Thun-Hohenstein (1823-1904) - Austrian politician; at the end of the course in law, he served in embassies first in Munich, then in Paris, Brussels, The Hague, and St. Petersburg. In 1860–66 he was a messenger in Mexico, in 1866–67 in the Hanseatic cities. In 1867 he returned to Bohemia, where he was elected to the Bohemian Landtag, and this latter was elected to the Chamber of Deputies of the Reichsrat. In 1872 he was appointed a lifetime member of the House of Lords. Belonged to the most moderate members of the feudal party.
- Prince Franz-Anton von Thun-Hohenstein (1847-1916) - Austrian politician; the oldest son of Frederick.
- Count Galeazzo Maria von Thun-Hohenstein (1850-1931) - Grand Master of the Order of Malta (1905-1931).
- Rosa Thun (born 1954, nee Wozniakovska ( Polish. Woźniakowska ); completely - Rosa Maria, Countess von Tun-und-Hohenstein) - Polish publicist, member of the European Parliament (since 2004).
- Max von Thun (born 1977; fully - Maximilian Romedio Johann-Ernst, Count von Thun-und-Hohenstein) - Austrian actor and TV host; great-great-grandson of Frederick.
