Biography

After graduating from school in Istanbul, he studied physics and chemistry at Istanbul University . When he became a school principal, interest in cinema increased among the Ottomans . Uzkynay began to teach cinema at school. Due to the fact that there were many foreign cinemas in Istanbul, Uzkınay campaigned to build a fully Turkish cinema, which opened on March 19, 1914. The name of this cinema “The National Cinema” later changed to “Ali Efendi sineması”. At the same time, he continued to study the projector from Sigmund Weinberg, the first person to introduce cinema in the country.

Becoming a military man, on November 14, 1914, he withdrew the destruction of the Russian memorial church in San Stefano near Constantinople . This 150 mm film became known as the first documentary of Turkish cinema. A year later, on the orders of General Enver Pasha, he founded the Central Military Film Department. Sigmund Weinberg became the head of the department, and the Uzkynay became his assistant. The following year he changed his post.

After studying in Germany, in spite of many difficulties, he finished the first feature film, The Marriage of Himmet Aga , in 1918. In 1954 he retired.
