The bridge was built in 1963-1965. the federal government and the governments of both provinces. It is owned by the Public Works and Government Services Agency of Canada . The bridge is named after John MacDonald and Georges-Etienne Cartier , joint prime ministers of the province of Canada in the mid-19th century, representing respectively the English- and French-speaking parts of Canada.
On both sides of the bridge there are curbs for pedestrians and cyclists . On the Gatineau side, the bridge immediately goes into the motorway, where cyclists and pedestrians are prohibited, so the paths for them turn into a nearby park or other streets.
