History

According to the date of the construction of the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Rogatin, opinions among scientific researchers differ. But it is believed that the temple is one of the oldest religious buildings in Ukraine, and was built in the XII-XIV centuries, that is, during the Principality of Galicia .

It is also known that the church burned three times, and it was rebuilt every time with some changes both external and in the interior.

The Orthodox Church Brotherhood built its own temple iconostasis in 1642 , which lasted until 1932 , until it was replaced with a new one. After the Brest Church Union, the Uniates took over the temple.

During the First World War , when Rogatin was almost completely burned out, the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary remained untouchable. And during the German attack on Galicia in World War II (1941), a bomb fell into the temple. As a result of its hit, the roof burned down, only the walls remained. Soon, the master was restored by the master Nikolai Darmits. But three years later, in 1944 , a high-explosive bomb hit the temple and destroyed the church from the inside. The rector of the temple at that time was Father Denis Telishchuk (1885-1952).

After the war, restoration work began in the temple, which lasted almost 10 years. On July 31, 1955, the consecration of the Rohatin Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary to Bishop Anthony took place. The iconostasis in its current state was completed in 1961 .

After the collapse of the USSR, the UGCC Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Rogatin experienced great changes - the church was enriched with interior decoration, restoration was made, the appearance and coating of domes and crosses with gold leaf are striking; also built a sculpture of the Mother of God .

In 1998, the Charity Fund “Caritas Love and Mercy” was created in the church.

At present, the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Rogatin is not only a shrine, but also a historical and architectural memorial of national importance.
