Biography

The Early Years, Rites of Spring

Canty began playing drums at the age of 15 in the short-lived band Deadline, a recording of which was included in Flex Your Head . In early 1985, he joined the band Rites of Spring . Later he also joined the groups One Last Wish and Happy Go Licky .

Fugazi

Canty became a Fugazi drummer in 1987 and participated in band recordings and tours until the band went on their “indefinite vacation” in 2003.

Many of Fugazi's songs since the release of Steady Diet of Nothing are based on guitar riffs invented by Canty at the band's rehearsals. Canty, as a skilled multi-instrumentalist, also wrote piano compositions (he plays the version of “Bed for the Scraping” in a documentary about the band Intstrument ), and also recorded bass parts for some songs. [1] An interesting detail is that he uses a large ship bell in his drum kit.

In 2007, Stylus Magazine marked Kanti at 29th place on the list of “50 Greatest Rock Drummers”, so he surpassed even jazz virtuoso Billy Cobham . [2]

Soundtracks, films, filmmaking and side projects

Canty often composes soundtracks for documentaries from the Discovery Channel and The Learning Channel . Often participates in recordings or helps with the production of recordings of groups from Washington. During Fugazi's vacation, Canty was involved in a side project called Garland Of Hours , along with vocalist / cellist / keyboardist Amy Domingues and drummer / percussionist Jerry Busher. Both of these band members also participated in various Fugazi recordings. Their first self-titled album was released on the Arrest Records label , founded by Bush and Canty's younger brother, James (a member of Nation of Ulysses .

Canty created music for The Hill's documentary series, released on the Sundance Channel in August 2006, and continues to make music for the Hard Time series on the National Geographic Channel.

In 2004, Canty and director Christoph Green co-founded the Trixie DVD label to release their own series of musical films Burn To Shine . The series includes several discs with video recordings of how several groups in one particular city perform one composition (without overlays and from one take) in a house intended for demolition (and at the end of each film the process of house destruction is documented). The series featured such musical projects as Bob Mold , Weird War , Q and Not U , Ted Leo , French Toast, The Medications , The Evens , Garland Of Hours , The Lonesome Organist , Pit Er Pat , Shellac , The Ponys , Wilco , Tight Phantomz, Freakwater, Red Eyed Legnds, Tortoise , The Thermals , Quasi , The Planet The , Mirah, Sleater-Kinney , The Ready, The Lifesavas, The Shins, The Decemberists , Wet Confetti, The Gossip .

Together with the same team that was involved in the creation of the Burn to Shine series, Canty and Green made a Bob Muld concert recording entitled “Circle of Friends.” Canty not only produced this film, but also performed on this show as drummer.

Canty and Greene also shot Sunken Treasure: Live in the Pacific Northwest, a tour by Jeff Tweedy ( Wilco ), and a Wilco tour called Ashes of American Flags.

In late 2004 and early 2005, Canty recorded drum tracks for Bob Muld's solo album Body of Song and went on a tour with him in support of this record. Later, Canty participated in the recording of another album of Bob - District Line , released in 2008.

He produced the albums Ted Leo and the Pharmacists Living With the Living and The Tyranny of Distance , and also produced Benjy Ferree , the album The Thermals The Body, The Blood, The Machine , French Toast records, and compiled the album of the same name by The Aquarium .

He directed the DVD of a solo performance by his friend Eddie Vedder ( en: Eddie Vedder ) entitled Water on the Road . [3]
