From the history of the theater

The Drama Theater in Drohobych was founded after the entry of the Western Ukrainian lands into the Ukrainian SSR in 1939 .

The first troupe of actors was staffed by local actors-amateurs and graduates of the Kiev Theater Institute and the Dnipropetrovsk Theater School [1] .

During the war, one part of the actors remained in Drogobych occupied by the Germans. In July 1941, the OUN “Svobodnoe Slovo” newspaper began to publish here, in which it was reported that an amateur drama circle was created at the OOK (Ukrainian District Committee) at the OUN propaganda department.

When Drohobych was liberated by Soviet troops, in December 1944, the Drohobych Ukrainian Music and Drama Theater named after N. Kropyvnytsky returned from evacuation, which merged with the local troupe and began working under the name Drohobych Regional Music and Drama Theater [2] .

The Drogobych artists went on their first tour in 1950 .

Since 1970, the theater, which retained regional status even after the entry of the Drogobych region into the Lviv region, bore the name of the Ukrainian Soviet playwright Yaroslav Galan .

In the Soviet period, the theater worked: People's Artists of the Ukrainian SSR Y. Gelyas, N. Andrusenko, V. Konopatsky, S. Smeyan, playwright V. Sychevsky, Honored Artist V. Varetskaya and others.

In 1986 - 1992, the main director of the Lviv Regional Ukrainian Music and Drama Theater in Drogobych was Yaroslav Babiy, who for the first time in modern Ukraine (together with B. Melnichuk) staged the performances "Mazepa" and "Sotnikovna" based on the works of Bogdan Lepky [3] .

In independent Ukraine, the Lviv Regional Academic Music and Drama Theater changed its name to the prominent Drohobychin Yuri Drohobych (Kotermak) , the first doctor of medicine in Central Europe , and became known as the Yuri Drohobych Lviv Regional Music and Drama Theater .

In the second half of the 2000s, a long reconstruction of the theater’s premises lasted; therefore, the musical and drama theater from Drohobych toured [4] , becoming one of the most active groups in terms of tours in the whole country. In just a year, the Drogobych Theater manages to show more than 450 performances.
