Initial Biography
Alexander Dmitrievich Berezin was born in 1895 in Vladimir in a working class family.
Passed exams for high school externally.
Military Service
World War I and Civil War
In 1915, with the graduation from the ensign school, Berezin was sent to the front, where he rose to the rank of headquarters captain . After he was seriously wounded, he was demobilized.
May 4, 1918 joined the CPSU (b) [1] and by party mobilization was drafted into the ranks of the Red Army .
He took part in the Civil War . In 1919 he was an assistant commander of a separate battalion of the Cheka.
Interwar
On August 19, 1939, Alexander Dmitrievich Berezin was appointed to the post of commander of the 119th Infantry Division formed in Krasnoyarsk .
June 4, 1940 Berezin was awarded the title of Major General .
World War II
June 29, with the division was sent to the front. After unloading and march, the division took up defensive positions in the Olenin area, where it took part in the construction of the Rzhev section of the Rzhev-Vyazemsky fortified area. Being in one place, was part of the 24th, 30th, 31st armies. The first battle, according to the magazine of military operations, the 634th Infantry Regiment of the division took on October 8 south of Olenino , in the area of Dudkino, Aksenino.
In December, the division distinguished itself in participating in the Kalinin offensive operation , during which it crossed the Volga and, having organized a bridgehead, along with other formations liberated the city of Kalinin . For the successful participation of the division, the title of guard was awarded.
Former commander of the 31st Army, Vasily Dalmatov, in the book “The Frontier of the Great Battle” wrote:
“I can’t help but recall the 119th Infantry Division of the Krasnoyarsk Division, which entered more than one bright page in the annals of the heroic struggle of the Red Army with superior enemy forces in 1941. Siberians showed an example of selfless devotion to the motherland, examples of courage and courage. The division was commanded by General A.D. Berezin. One of the first Siberian divisions in March was awarded the title of 17th Guards. ”
In January 1942, Alexander Berezin was awarded the Order of the Red Banner .
June 6, 1942 was transferred to the headquarters of the 41st Army .
He died on July 5, 1942 and was buried in a military burial near the village of Demyakhi, Belsky District , now Tver Region. Identified by surviving documents and the Order of the Red Banner [2] .
Ratings and Opinions
The behavior of General Berezin, like many other senior commanders, during the Great Patriotic War was sharply criticized by his former subordinate A. I. Shumilin in memoirs of the last “Vanka-Rotny”.
Memory
In the city of Bely , a small part of which the 119th Infantry Division liberated on January 29, 1942, Warehouse Street was renamed Berezina Street, and since then the Berezin burial place was not known, a memorial plate was installed at its beginning.
On September 21, 1966, in Krasnoyarsk, 2nd Polyarnaya Street was renamed Major General A. D. Berezin Street [3] [4] .
In 1985, in honor of the 40th anniversary of the Victory in Vladimir, the former Svyaz pass was renamed to A. D. Berezin Street.
The name of the commander of the 119th battalion A. D. Berezin is carved on the slab of the memorial complex “To the Siberian Warriors”.
