The length of the river is 272 km, the basin area is 12,600 km² [4] . The long-term average annual water flow at the mouth is 138 m³ / s (flow volume 4.355 km³ / year) [5] .
It takes its source from the western slopes of Mount Stolovaya (Ichigemsky ridge) [6] . Oklan flows in the zone of intermittent permafrost distribution. In the lower reaches the swampy plain, where the channel is divided into several branches. It flows into Penzhin on the right [7] 97 km from its mouth [4] . Along the banks of the river willow and poplar grows [5] .
The food of the river is mostly snowy. Oklan begins to freeze in mid-October and is finally icebound at the end of the month. The ice thickness reaches 70 cm, in some years up to 1 m. It is opened in the second half of May, the ice completely disappears by the end of the month. Flood accounts for about 80% of the annual water flow. Throughout the summer, the melting of ice formed in winter continues [5] .
The name in translation from Koryak Yylan is “the icy path”. At the end of the 17th century, the Aklansky prison was founded on the river [8] .
