Life and work
In 1880-1887 he studied painting at the Düsseldorf Academy of Arts under the supervision of Eugen Dücker and Johann Peter Jansen . Then he continued his studies in Munich , from where he undertook several study tours, in which he drew inspiration for his paintings - to the Alps, Norway and Svalbard, Italy. Very popular were his works, written also during travels to the East - in Constantinople, Athens, Palestine, Lebanon, Egypt and Arabia.
He painted mainly with oil paints and gouache, sometimes with watercolors. His works are characterized by expressiveness inherent in the expressionist style, a masterful play of colors and light, and thoroughness in depicting details. He painted mainly landscapes, interiors of buildings, views of big cities.
G. Makko's paintings can be seen in many museums in Germany - in Dusseldorf, Munich, Aachen, as well as in Prague museums. Some of them were taken out by the German occupation authorities from the Art Museum of Simferopol and have not yet been discovered.
