Biography

Born on August 7, 1934 in Sevastopol in the family of a naval officer. Sergei Nikolayevich about his childhood: “I was born into a marine family, my grandfather Filipp Andreyevich Telechev was a sailor in the tsarist fleet, and father Nikolai Aleksandrovich Lebedev, after the revolution in the red fleet, was a sailor and then captain of rank I and resigned as the Commander of the Accounting Unit of the Russian Federation. I went along the civil line, becoming a lawyer. At school N3 he began to study in 7th grade in 1948, after it was restored from the destruction received during the war. She looked great on September 1, 1948, starting work under the auspices of the outstanding director Vera Romanovna Devochko. On Sundays we ourselves built a side platform in the yard. ”

In 1952 he entered the Faculty of Law at the Institute of Foreign Trade (now part of MGIMO) and graduated with honors in 1957. After graduating from the institute, he worked as a lawyer at the Sovfraht V / O for two years.

In 1959 he entered the graduate school of MGIMO. In 1961-1962 became the first Soviet lawyer to study at the law department of the University of Michigan in the USA (under the exchange program).

In 1962 he defended his thesis on the subject “Basic issues of the enforcement of foreign arbitral awards”. In the same year he became a teacher at MGIMO.

From 1974 to 2005, he headed the Department of International Private and Civil Law at MGIMO, and later again became a teacher of this department.

In parallel with the scientific, actively engaged in practical activities. He participated in more than 600 international affairs (both in Russia and abroad). In 1974, he became chairman of the Maritime Arbitration Commission at the RF CCI and holds this post to this day.

In addition, he took part in the work of the Panel of Commissioners for Claims of Category “C” of the UN Compensation Commission (in connection with the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait). He participated in projects for the unification of law, including in the framework of CMEA, UNCITRAL , and The Hague Conference on Private International Law .

He participated in the development of important international legal documents, namely:

  • Convention on the Resolution of Arbitration of Civil Disputes Arising from the Relations of Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation (Moscow, 1972);
  • Uniform Rules of Arbitration Courts at the Chambers of Commerce of the CMEA Member Countries;
  • Convention on the Law Applicable to Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (The Hague, 1986);
  • UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules ;
  • many others.

Actively contributed to the adoption of the Law of the Russian Federation of July 7, 1993 No. 5338-I “On International Commercial Arbitration”

He died on April 11, 2016.

Degree

  • Candidate of Law , Professor . The author of more than 150 scientific papers, including those published abroad. The works include several books on arbitration (1965, 1978, 1988), the Russian translation of the Uniform Trade Code of the USA (1994). Co-author of a monograph on the Vienna Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (2002). Co-author of textbooks on civil law of foreign countries and the legal regulation of foreign economic relations.
