Before the battle
After the defeat of Colonel Kulnev at Sikajoki , the commander of the Swedish troops in Finland, Field Marshal Klingspor , counting on his numerical superiority, weakness and isolation of the Russian front corps, General Tuchkov , decided to break it in pieces.
The primary goal, Klingspor outlined the detachment of Revolax Major General Bulatov (3 battalions, 2 platoons of hussars, 50 Cossacks and 4 guns - only about 1,500 people).
For the main blow to the Russian right flank, a Kronstedt brigade (2,000 men) was assigned, and against the left flank - a weaker Adlerkreitz squad.
Battle Progress
The attack is supposed to be carried out simultaneously, early in the morning of April 15 (27). But the Adlerkreitz went to the Russian frontier posts before dawn. A shootout ensued.
A battalion of the Perm regiment and 1 gun were sent to help the front line. Soon Kronstedt appeared on the right wing of Bulatov. Ahead of his columns were scattered arrows on skis .
Bulatov, deciding to defend his position, placed three companies of the Perm Regiment on the left flank to the river, from where the enemy appeared; Revolax took one company, and left the battalion of the Mogilev regiment in reserve .
Kronstedt's arrows, moving forward, opened fire. Bulatov was wounded. Then the Swedes attacked Revolax and, not meeting resistance there (the cover company retreated), went to the battalion of the Mogilev regiment to cut off the Russian retreat to Sikajoki. Bulatov hastened to the threatened point with three companies of the Perm Regiment.
Arriving in place and placing two battalions on a hill, he opened artillery fire and fought off enemy attacks from the front and to the right. But at that time the Adlerkreitz moved to the left wing of Bulatov, as well as to the rear, since the battalion of the Perm Regiment, which was fighting against him, under the pressure of superior forces, retreated to Sikayoki, without warning Bulatov about it. In addition, having found the Swedes in the rear, the battalion from the 2nd line also left the battlefield.
As a result, Bulatov was surrounded by the enemy from all sides. Secondly wounded, wanting to break through, he hit with hostility; but, shot through the chest, he fell and was captured. This completed the defeat of the Russian detachment.
Battle Results
In total, Bulatovβs detachment lost 3 guns, 9 charging boxes and 487 killed and captured; the rest of the detachment managed to break through to the detachment Tuchkov .
The consequences of the defeat at Revolax turned out to be extremely unfavorable for Russia: Tuchkov retreated to Gamla-Karleba, and thus a considerable territory was ceded to the Swedes; the spirit of the Swedish army rose significantly, and the Finns, assured of the opportunity to defeat the Russians, rebelled everywhere, carrying out armed attacks even on significant Russian troops.
