Biography
Born June 22, 1869 in Quebec in the family of businessman and politician Richard Dobell. Charles Dobell received a comprehensive education at a private school in his hometown and at the Charterhouse school in England . In 1890, Charles graduated from the Royal Military College of Canada . In 1891 he received the rank of lieutenant and began his service. He participates in the occupation by the international forces of Crete during which he receives the rank of major .
During the second Boer War , Charles goes to the front where he was awarded with awards and thanks from the command. After the war, Dobell served in Nigeria , where he received the rank of colonel . After that, Dobell, as part of the British forces in China, participated in the suppression of the Boxer Rebellion . After the uprising was crushed, Dobell was appointed Inspector General of British Forces in West Africa.
After the outbreak of World War I, Dobell took part in battles in Cameroon . After the capture of German Cameroon by the troops of the Entente, Dobell was promoted to lieutenant general . Then Dobell was transferred to the Egyptian Expeditionary Force . In 1915, he received the title of New Year and was a Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George. He was also made a knight-commander of the Order of the Bath. [1] From 1915 to 1917, along with General Archibald Murray, commanded the British forces on the Palestinian front . In 1917, Dobell was dismissed.
