Dee De Bridgewater ( Eng. Dee Dee Bridgewater , real name is Dennis Garrett , born May 27, 1950 , Memphis , Tennessee , USA ) is an American jazz singer, one of the best jazz vocalists of her generation [1] [2] .

He is the owner of two Grammy Awards ( 1998 , 2011 ) and the Tony Award (1975). For some time she lived in France. It was France that truly revealed her talent as a jazz singer and theater actress . She worked in a TV show with Charles Aznavour . He is the owner of the main award of the San Remo Festival in 1990. She created her own ensemble, gained recognition and returned to America.

Biography

Dennis Garrett was born on May 27, 1950 . Her father Matthew Garrett was a trumpeter of the Memphian jazz scene. When Denis was three years old, the family moved to Flint (Michigan) , where Matthew got a job as a security guard .

In 1969, Dennis Garrett performed with the Goodrich band at a festival at the University of Illinois at Champaign. After that, the director of the university John Garvey invited Harriet to his ensemble for a six-month tour in the Soviet Union [1] .

Also, Dee Dee took part in the recordings of such artists as: Stanley Clark (album of Children of Forever ), Roland Kirk ( Prepare Thyself to Deal with a Miracle ), Frank Foster ( The Loud Minority ), Buddy Terry ( Lean on Him ) and Norman Connors ( Love from the Sum ) [3] .

In 1980, Bridgewater was ready to begin a solo career, but in 1985 she left for Flint, due to her mom's health problems. In 1986 she played in musicals , but did not forget about singing. She performed with Clark Terry, James Moody and Jimmy McGriff. In the late 80s, Bridgewater secured the title of the outstanding jazz vocalist of Europe . After some time, Dee Dee recorded the song “Precious Thing” with Ray Charles , and later entered Dee Dee's album Victim of Love , which was released by Polydor Records . Soon he got to the top of the jazz charts [3] .

Two years after the release of the Keeping Tradition , Bridgewater released the album Love and Peace: A Tribute to Horace Silver [1] , again Bridgewater was nominated for a Grammy, and album sales were high. The next work of Bridgewater was the album Dear Ella [1] , dedicated to her idol Ella Fitzgerald .

In 2002 she introduced This Is New to the public, dedicated to the German composer Kurt Weill , and in 2005 her first album with songs in French was released [1] . In 2007, she released the album Red Earth [4] .

In 2010, the singer's new album was released - Eleanora Fagan (1915-1959): To Billie with Love from Dee Dee Bridgewater , dedicated to singer Billy Holiday . In 2011, Dee Dee introduced her collection Midnight Sun [1] .

Having written the album Eleanora Fagan (1915-1959): To Billie with Love from Dee Dee Bridgewater , Dee Dee Bridgewater paid tribute to the 20th-century vocalist, who died 40 years half a century ago [4] .

In 1975, Dee Dee received the Tony Theater Award in the category Best Supporting Actress in a Musical for the role of the good sorceress Glinda in the musical The Wiz , a free theatrical adaptation of The Wizard of Oz .

  • In honor of the singer named the French climbing rose 'Dee Dee Bridgewater' .
  • Dee Dee is one of the two winners of the San Remo festival who do not have Italian citizenship. Another is the English singer Sarah Jane Morris .
