Life and work
Born in the DPRK . He worked as an artist in the propaganda department of the Korean People’s Army . In 1998, he fled from North Korea to China , then lived in Laos and Thailand . Since 2001, lives and works as a freelance artist in South Korea, where he studied painting at Hongik University of Seoul . In South Korea, fearing reprisals against relatives remaining in North Korea, he adopted the pseudonym Song Mu , hiding his real name and refusing to be photographed for the press.
He paints his paintings in the style of socialist realism , often with elements of pop art . His work, exhibited at the Busan Art Biennale, depicting DPRK President Kim Il Sung , caused a scandal; it was removed from the exhibition as representing the danger of “communist art”. The artist himself sees his work of this kind as a means of political satire.
