In the late 1430s, relations between father and son deteriorated sharply, as the father began to show a clear preference for his illegitimate son - Wieland von Freiberg. In 1438, Ludwig VIII rebelled against his father, and united not only with the Bavarian-Munich Duke Albrecht III , but even with the Bavarian-Landshut Duke Henry XVI , who tried to kill Ludwig VII during the Council of Constance . In 1443, he managed to capture his father in Neuburg an der Donau and put him in custody until the end of his life.
In 1441, Ludwig VIII married Margarita, daughter of the Brandenburg Elector Frederick I. They had no children, and therefore, after the death of Ludwig, the Bavarian-Ingolstadt Duchy was annexed to the Bavarian-Landshut .
