History
In the Middle Ages, Ondskot was a thriving center for the cloth industry, the raw material for which was flax grown on adjacent lands.
Since the sixteenth century, however, the city, which departed to the Spanish Netherlands, was repeatedly plundered during frequent wars. In 1566, local beggars broke into the church and plundered it, which gave rise to an uprising along the coast of the Netherlands and strengthened the position of Calvinists in the region.
Repeatedly recovering from ruins, the city did not survive the frequent attacks of French troops in the second half of the 17th century; many artisans fled to present-day Belgium and England, bringing with them the centuries-old traditions of French weavers.
In September 1793, during the First Coalition War , the city became the site of the Battle of Ondskot , one of the key battles of the Revolutionary Wars in France . Local volunteers stubbornly resisted the British and forced them to retreat and lift the siege of Dunkirk [1] .
