Timeline and Reading Order

Robert Salvatore began work on the cycle with the trilogy " Valley of the Ice Wind ". According to the initial plans of the writer, the main character was to be the barbarian Wulfgar , and Drizzt Do'Urden - his companion. However, the drow explorer quickly gained the love of readers and became much more popular than Wulfgar. Salvatore decided to write a prequel trilogy that tells about the life of Drizzt before arriving in the Icewind Valley - about his family, childhood and youth, life in Menzoberranzan and how he eventually left the Underdark . In subsequent books, Drizzt is finally designated as the main character of the entire series (only the novel "The Ridge of the World" is completely dedicated to Wulfgar).

There is a plot offshoot from the cycle - the “ Mercenary Blades ” trilogy, which tells of the adventures of the mercenary Jarlax and Artemis Entreri . These characters played an important role in the Saga of Drizzt books and gained great popularity. In this regard, Robert Salvatore decided to write an independent trilogy, with Jarlax and Artemis as the main characters. The book “Servant of the Crystal” was originally part of the series “ Paths of Darkness ”, but after writing two more novels it became part of the independent trilogy “Mercenary Blades”, and the series “Paths of Darkness” from a tetralogy turned into a trilogy.

Due to the presence of the Dark Elf prequel trilogy and the Mercenary Blades trilogy branch, confusion arose in the order in which books were read. The table below shows the works in the order of their writing and according to the chronology of literary time. The first column in parentheses indicates the years of writing of each work, the second column shows the years of events described in the book, relative to the chronology of the fictional world (LD - Valley Calculation). Italics highlighted stories.

Characters in the cycle

Main characters

  • Drizzt Do'Urden

Dark elf drow who left his hometown of Menzoberranzan , becoming an apostate. Renouncing the bloody cult of the spider goddess Lolth , he went to the Surface, where he wandered in search of a new home. People accustomed to hating the dark elves persecuted him, even when he saved them from death. Only the few who became his friends found that the elf was full of noble principles and mercy. Drizzt is a ranger and worships Milikki, the goddess of nature. After long wanderings, Drizzt found a house and friends in the Valley of the Ice Wind. After conquering the underground dwarf city of Mithril Halla , the drow settled there, but spent more time traveling alone or with his friends.

  • Catti-brie

The adopted daughter of Bruenor, a true friend of Drizzt, and later his wife. Catti-Brie was the first from the Valley of the Ice Wind who could see the true face of the dark elf Drizzt Do'Urden (and, in addition, she was able to convince many of this, including her adoptive father, in part). She had an affair with the barbarian Wulfgar, whom Bruenor also raised. However, after the events described in The Dark Legacy, she mourned the deceased friend for a long time. As time passed, Catti-Brie found herself in love with her old friend and associate, Dzitra Do'Urdena. For a long time, their love did not develop. Only in the book “Two Swords” did they become lovers.

  • Bruenor Warhammer

Head of the Battle Ax Ax dwarf clan, eighth and tenth king Mithril Hall . Bruenor is a direct descendant of the Battle Ax Gandalug, the legendary progenitor of the Battle Ax clan. When Bruenor was still a child by the standards of dwarves, his hometown of Mithril Hull was conquered by a dragon named Shimmergloom and his duergar servants. Bruenor and the remains of his clan lost their home and were forced to settle in the far north, in the Valley of the Ice Wind. In the Valley of Icewind, Bruenor made real friends. Catti-Brie - the girl he adopted after the death of her parents, the dark elf Drizzt Do'Urden, the barbarian from the Elk Wulfgar tribe and the halfling Regis for many years were his faithful companions and accompanied in many adventures.

  • Wulfgar

The great hero of Utgart, the former leader of the barbaric tribe of Elk, the adopted son of Bruenor. The dwarf defeated Wulfgar in battle, but he noticed something unusual in the young man’s behavior and saved his life. In return, he demanded five years of slavery from the barbarian. Wulfgar initially hated the deal, but these five years with Bruenor changed his life. The dwarf became a mentor to the young barbarian, and over time he learned more and more about the world around him. The most important thing he learned from Bruenor was the values of patience and honor, and he sought to cultivate these qualities in himself. The last six months of slavery, he was taught by Drizzt Do'Urden - one of Bruenor's best friends - the art of battle. After graduating, Wulfgar traveled most of his life with Drizzt, Bruenor, Catti-brie and Regis.

  • Regis

Halflings thief from Kalimport . Initially, Regis joined the ranger group by chance, fleeing the assassin of Artemis Entreri , but after their first joint adventure, the halflander always accompanied the drow and his friends in all their dangerous wanderings. In 1364, when the companions went to the Temple of the Soaring Spirit to the priest Cadderly to destroy a powerful dark artifact , Regis was seriously wounded and almost died. After that, his character changed - halfling became more determined, bolder, less lazy and more active. Friends often chuckled at the half-slick, called him Puzan, but his sharp mind, cunning and dexterity, which helped them in difficult situations, were highly appreciated.
