Biography
Born in 1761. Parents - Alexander Ivanovich Cherkasov and Ekaterina Ivanovna, Princess Biron . She was educated at the Smolny Institute of Noble Maidens, which she graduated with a code in 1779, receiving the title of maid of honor. On August 16, 1780, she married Colonel Eustache (Augustus) Ivanovich Palmenbach . Married in St. Petersburg in St. Isaac's Cathedral [1] .
In 1796, she was appointed assistant to S. I. de Lafon , head of the Smolny Institute, and after the death of the latter, in August 1797, she was appointed head of this institution “with the assignment of the title of excellence to her in the place” and held this position until 1802. She enjoyed the full confidence of the Empress Maria Fyodorovna , who entrusted her with the upbringing of the two daughters of A.H. Benckendorf , as well as the princesses Biron. In 1801 she was awarded the Order of St. Catherine of the Small Cross .
She died in St. Petersburg on June 23 ( July 5 ), 1832 , was buried in the Smolensk Orthodox cemetery .
The inscription on the monument [2] :
Here lies the body of the cavalier lady Elizabeth Alexandrovna Palmenbach, nee Baroness Cherkasova, who died on the 23rd of June 1832, the 71st year of her birth.
She had three daughters: Sofia (1781-1839, married Senator P. L. Batyushkov ), Alexander (1784-1836, married Senator A. Ya. Buler ) and Catherine .
Memory
On July 30, 1864, Palmenbakhsky Lane near the Smolny Monastery was named after her (since 1877 - Palmenbakhskaya Street, now Smolny Street ).
