Triax cable

Triaxial BNC Connector. The new variations use three keyways instead of two, as here, to avoid accidentally connecting to a regular BNC connector .

A triax cable , or triax for short, is a type of electric cable that is related to a coax cable , but differs from it by the presence of an additional layer of insulation and a secondary screening conductor. Compared to coaxial cable, it provides wider bandwidth and increased noise immunity, but is more expensive. It is widely used in television broadcasting for connecting professional video cameras and camera control panels. An external conductor is often used as a shielding ground. The central core serves to transmit data and supply voltage; the inner screen is common ground. Frequency separation of channels allows the camera to transmit audio and video signals (including HD) via cable, and the remote can control the camera by transmitting settings (for example, exposure parameters), commands (for example, tally - live broadcast indication for the operator and subject) and providing food. [1] [2]

At facilities that often serve as the workplace of teleoperators (such as stadiums), triax cables from the survey points inside the building to the parking spot of the mobile television station are often laid in the building design. This greatly simplifies the life of television workers, as it removes the need to lay, and after shooting, remove your own cables.

  • In 1992, Philips in Breda received the prestigious Technology Academy Award from the American Television Academy for developing technology for using triax cable with color cameras.

Also, triaxial cables are used for precision measurements of low-current signals. The potentials of the central core and the inner screen are maintained at the same level, which practically eliminates leakage currents, despite possible insulation defects. Leakage currents can occur between the internal and external shielding conductors, however, this does not affect the current measurements through the central core, which is connected to the object under study.

The triaxial cable can be used in conjunction with home switchgears [3] , which allow you to combine and separate a variety of signals for transmission over the cable.
