Life and work
Born in the family of the sculptor Antoine Laurent Dantin . His uncle, Jean Pierre Dantant , was also a famous sculptor. At the age of 16 he began to study at the Higher School of Fine Arts in Paris , then he worked in the studio of the artist Isidore Pils . Also studied with Henri Lehman . In 1867 he received his first large order - for a large-format canvas depicting St. Trinity. In 1869, first exhibited at the Paris Salon (painting "Scene from the death of Pompeii"). In 1870, the Franco-Prussian war interrupted his work, and he enlisted. He was awarded the rank of sergeant, and later he received the rank of lieutenant.
After the end of the Franco-Prussian war, the artist, in addition to his usual paintings of mythological and historical themes, also created canvases depicting scenes from sculptural workshops familiar to him from childhood. He adhered to the academic style of painting, his work was recognized by his contemporaries, a number of paintings acquired by the French state. In 1890, 1894 and in 1895 he was a member of the jury of the Paris Salon. In his last creative period he also painted landscapes - views of the resort village of Villeville in northern France, where he settled.
