Biography

He was born on December 25, 1854 in the village of Krugly Kozlovsky district of the Tambov province (now Michurinsky district of the Tambov region) in the family of a priest. He was related to St. Nicholas of Japan .

In 1876 ​​he graduated from the Tambov Theological Seminary , after which he entered the St. Petersburg Theological Academy , which he graduated in 1880 with a candidate of theology with the right to obtain a master’s degree without a new oral test [1] .

In the same year, he was appointed a teacher at the Voronezh Theological Seminary .

In 1881, he was confirmed to the degree of Master of Theology for the essay "Eastern and Western schools during the time of Charlemagne, their relationship between themselves, to the classical and ancient Christian, and the setting of theology in them."

July 10, 1883 he was appointed priest to the church at the First Cadet Corps in St. Petersburg and the corps law teacher.

In 1897 he was elevated to the rank of archpriest .

He took part in the monarchist movement in Moscow, was chairman of the Brotherhood of the Resurrection of Christ. He was elected an honorary member of the Russian Monarchist Assembly , actively participated in its work.

In 1906 he was appointed assistant to the chief observer of the teaching of the Law of God in the military schools of the capital.

He was widowed in 1906 and on March 1, 1908, bishop of Vologda Nikon (Rozhdestvensky) was tonsured a monk with the name Vasily, and on March 2 he was elevated to the rank of archimandrite .

On August 21, 1909 he was appointed rector of the Savin of the Storozhevsky Monastery and became the second vicar of the Moscow diocese.

December 9, 1910 spoke in the debate when discussing the report of G. A. Shechkov on Freemasonry , called the Masons "workers of the coming kingdom of Antichrist." As an honorary member, he participated in the proceedings of the Fifth All-Russian Congress of the Union of Russian People in Moscow November 21 - December 1, 1911 (Dubrovinsky Congress) [6] .

After his dismissal on November 23, 1912 from the Moscow department of Vladimir (Epiphany) and until his arrival in Moscow on December 23 of the same year, Metropolitan Makarii (Nevsky) temporarily ruled the Moscow diocese .

He was very popular in Moscow, especially among the common people, Metropolitan Manuel (Lemeshevsky) wrote about him: “Moscow deeply honored him and called him the“ people's saint ”” [6] .
