Biography
Ivan Perestiani was born on April 13, 1870 in Taganrog in the family of Nikolai Perestiani, a college assessor who served at the customs and Taganrog branch of the state bank [3] .
Since 1886, he performed on the stage of the Taganrog Theater under the pseudonym “Ivan Nevedomov” [4] , and subsequently worked as an actor and director in several traveling provincial theaters. In 1916 , already having 30 years of theatrical experience, he was invited by the director to the Moscow Aquarium Theater. In the same year he made his film debut with Eugene Bauer .
February 16, 1916 is a memorable day in my life. This is the day I first appeared in front of a movie camera as an actor. I vaguely remember the excitement and fear that gripped me on the morning of this memorable day, and many of the heavy thoughts that tormented me all the first half of the day until the start of the shooting, which, as I understood later, was another breakdown of my acting qualities ... [5]
Soon, Perestiani, continuing to act, tries himself as a screenwriter and director of silent films. In the summer of 1917, in the Crimea and Sochi, he put on for the Biofilm studio several paintings that were shot in interiors already in Moscow, and subsequently put on dozens of films for private studios. He receives an invitation from the Swedish film studio Efa, however, inspired by revolutionary transformations, he remains in Russia and begins to put on campaign films.
In 1920, Perestiani left for Georgia , where he made the first ever Georgian film “ Arsen Giorgiashvili ” (“The Assassination of General Gryaznov”), in which he also played one of the secondary roles, and taught at a training studio for young filmmakers. In 1923, he began work on the famous film Red Devils , which became one of the most famous and often cited works of Soviet silent adventure films. Subsequently, Perestiani also staged several sequels of this film - “ Crime of Princess Shirvan ”, “ Punishment of Princess Shirvan ”, “ Illan Dilly ” and “ Savur-Grave ” (all - 1926 ).
In 1928, Perestiani was invited to work as a director at the Odessa film studio VUFKU, in 1929 he switched to the film studio "Armenkino". Since 1932, he has been an actor and teacher at the Tbilisi Theater Institute and the School of Film Actor at the Tbilisi Film Studio, a consultant to the screenwriting department. During this period, he also starred in several films of Yerevan and Tbilisi film studios.
In 1949 he was awarded the title of People's Artist of the Georgian SSR.
Ivan Perestiani died on May 14, 1959 in Moscow. He was buried at the Novodevichy cemetery .
In 1962, the publishing house "Art" published a book of memoirs by Ivan Perestiani "75 years of life in art."
